BOTOX® Cosmetic FAQ’s

Are BOTOX® injections painful?

BOTOX® is injected using a very fine needle and the discomfort is minimal…just a slight pinprick or bug bite sensation, although after the treatment you may experience a slight bruise at the injection site that can easily be covered with makeup.

Could I have an allergic reaction to BOTOX® or fillers?

There is no animal protein present in BOTOX® or fillers and because of this, the risk of allergic reaction is exceedingly low. These products are very safe and can be used without the need for skin testing.

How long do the results from BOTOX® last?

Effects from BOTOX® are not immediate and it can take up to two weeks to see the results. In most cases the results last for 3-4 months, and continued use can prevent new wrinkles from forming and results can begin to last longer.

Is BOTOX® safe?

Health Canada approved BOTOX Cosmetic® for wrinkle therapy in 2001 after it was proven to be very safe following extensive research and testing. In the amounts used for wrinkle treatments, the most common side effect is bruising which is temporary and localized to the injection site.

What is BOTOX®?

BOTOX® is the brand name for Botulinum Toxin ‘type a’, a purified protein that was originally developed to treat muscle disorders such as eye spasms. More recently it has been marketed for cosmetic use as it was found to relax the muscles that cause wrinkles. BOTOX® is the most popular non-invasive cosmetic surgery procedure in North America today.

BOTOXÂ is injected into the muscle in low and very dilute doses. When BOTOX® is injected into a muscle, it blocks the nerve impulse from reaching that area and that causes the muscle to relax. As the muscle relaxes, the dynamic wrinkle overlying the muscle is smoothed.

Will BOTOX® give me a fake, frozen look?

Not if you are treated by an experienced doctor who can determine the right dose and injection technique for you. The treatment only relaxes muscles beneath the frown lines, so other elements of facial expression remain active. It doesn’t affect your sensory nerves so you will have normal feeling in the treated areas.

Dermal Filler FAQ’s

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable gels made from naturally-occurring substances, such as hyaluronic acid which is a natural component of the skin. Dermal fillers are injected just under the skin in order to add volume to aging skin, lips and to fill and lift wrinkles and folds. Dermal fillers add volume for a more natural youthful appearance.

The most common areas treated with injectable dermal fillers are the smile lines around the nose and mouth, fine lines above the mouth, frown lines between the eyes, and acne scars.

There are a variety of fillers on the market. Dr. Lazaric is experienced with a variety of fillers and will help you choose the one that is right for you to give you the results you desire.

How long do dermal filler treatments last?

The results obtained with dermal fillers typically last 6 to 9 months. The results may last up to a year in some people. How long results last varies from person to person. Dermal fillers are gradually broken down and absorbed by the body, so the lines, wrinkles, or lips will ultimately return to their previous appearance without follow up treatments.

How are dermal filler treatments performed?

If the procedure is for lip augmentation or nasolabial folds, anesthetic injections may be given prior to starting the filler injections.

During the dermal filler procedure, the dermal filler gel is applied under the skin in tiny amounts using a very fine needle. The procedure can be mildly uncomfortable.

The dermal filler treatment procedure can take up to an hour to complete. However, most treatments only take 10 minutes.

If the procedure is on a smaller area many people can resume their regular daily activities right away. If larger areas are treated longer recovery times may be required, up to a couple of days. The gel produces volume under the wrinkle, which is lifted up and smoothed out. When enhancing lips or facial contours, fillers add volume and shape to the treated area.

Do the dermal filler injections hurt?

This answer to this question depends on the person. Some people have much more sensitive pain responses compared to other people. However, most people do not find that the injections hurt.

The level of discomfort also depends on the areas being treated. Treatments around the lips and nose tend to cause the most discomfort.

The use of topical anesthetic creams or ice packs before the procedure can greatly reduce the level of discomfort. Injections can be painful in sensitive areas so Dr. Lazaric may also inject local anesthesia to ensure the treatment is comfortable for you.
